Hudson: That's it man, game over man, game over!  What the fuck are we gonna do now?  What are we gonna do?

Burke: Maybe we could build a fire, sing a couple of songs, huh?  Why don't we try that?

Maybe I will need to build a fire and sing kumbaya to make myself feel better...  Well ok, I'm not really sad, it's not like I'm going to MISS GameSpy.  It's just an iconic piece of what I fondly recall being amazing years for PC gaming.  Thank god for no more Comrade launcher though amiright!?

Anyways, an announcement was posted today on their website.  The official end date for the service is May 31st, 2014.

PC Gamer has an article up with some additional information, like games that will be affected.

RIP

Loved me some games that used the service, but damn if it couldn't be a pain in the ass. Truly a PC icon that has fallen by the wayside though.

I remember needing to load a website, that was refreshed every 5 minutes or so, to grab a server IP, tab into the game, then try to join the IP.  You'd almost always have to try four or five different servers before you managed to connect to one that wasn't full by the time you had tabbed back in and entered the IP...

Gamespy changed all that.  Gamespy was my first experience with server selection software.  Finding a server, double clicking, having it reserve your spot, and load you in was revolutionary at the time!

By the by, you can find a full list of games that are suspected to be effected on Reddit right here.

For those games that will be effected by the shut down the developers of Game Ranger have spoken out and have support for matchmaking for a number of titles, and are currently working on supporting even more.  You can find Game Ranger's official site with download right here.

Was anybody else as addicted to Rise of Nations way back in the day as I was? That game is awesome, and still up there with my favorite RTS games.

Quake 2 Weapons Factory was what I used GameSpy for. After Ultima Online came out, I never touched another game supported by GameSpy.

And yes, I remember trying to snag an IP to play Quake II, III, or Unreal only to find the server was full. GameSpy restored peoples' sanity. If I recall, that company started as a gaming magazine company, too.

The moral of the story is, MMORPGs killed my inner FPS. Damn you Richard Garriott.

Yep. I remember buying Jurassic Park: Trespasser because of those damned discs. No one could play it, of course, since it used a complex physics engine that only workstations had capabilities of rendering back then, but still. The game was one of the first of its kind in 3D physics engines and deserves its (crashy, unworkable, other nasty names here) place in history thanks to PC Gamer pushing it out there on people lol.
