re: Sony Sells Square Enix Stock

In a move to try and bolster capital during a touch economic time for the company Sony has entered into an agreement to sell their holdings in Square Enix to SMBC Nikko Securities Inc., a large Japanese financial security firm.  The move will see control of Sony's shares, 8.2% of Square Enix, move to the firm for a total profit of (roughly) $47 Million dollars (the deal is $4.8 Billion Yen).

This ties in to several thousand lay offs, the sale of their Tokyo Offices and the announcement that they plan to sell off the Vaio PC brand and overhaul their TV operations into it's own subsidiary.  Expect more layoff's and more sales.  The financial picture will become clearer when they release year end financial results on May 14th.

The gaming side of things actually seem to be doing fairly well however.  PS4 sales are far above expectations and the Vita is doing well as well.  On the publishing side of things (SOE) seems to be doing ok but has seen some reworks of recent, including the Sony All Access Pass and pretty much every game being F2P, and again a clearer picture will emerge post May 14th.

Good. Since they've been in bed together the Final Fantasy series has went downhill exponentially. Maybe we'll see a return to the basics with future FF games. I'm unsure why SQuENix would even bother tying themselves down to a company as their games have classically been huge hits.

Sony is a good company but they micromanage their gaming industry far too much. When Verant Studios controlled Everquest (The game that MADE Sony Online Entertainment a household name) and Sony was just a partner, the game was much more fun. Then Sony swoops in and ruins the hell out of it by demanding quarterly or bi-yearly expansion packs to increase sales. Hopefully this doesn't affect Landmark as that game is freaking incredible.

Apparently SquareEnix is also refocusing on console RPG's in the upcoming future, going back to their roots as it were.

Good deal. I know Sony pulled the plug on FFXIV being on XBox 360, which may have actually turned that game on its head. It's kinda foolish to release a game nowadays on PC and not on XBox because they're programmed with virtually the same languages (C++/C#).

Either way, this could be the change Square/Enix needed to get their heads out of their asses and bring back the classics that everyone knows and loves as well as not have to worry about Sony drooping their all-controlling sac over their creative minds.
