re: What IS H1Z1?!

Well John Smedley didn't exactly say last night in a vague tweet.

So the long and short of it becomes, check out Game Talk Live on Twitch tonight at 5 pm PST for the announcement of SOE's latest sandbox adventure.  Previous "teases" indicated that it might have something to do with Zombie's and Smedley has said in the past that "Fans of SWG will be happy with a new property we're working on" or something that that accord.  You can also check out H1Z1's official site here.

I know I'm curious and will check it out.

So it indeed is a Zombie Survival MMO as the interwebz predicted.  It'll very much be in line with a Walking Dead kinda feel and, according to SOE, very Sandboxy.

The game will start off in a sort of Middle America area for the testing phases, and eventually ramp up to being SOE's own version of the U.S.  It will include harvesting, scavenging, building, and all sorts of survival needs (a survivor of the H1Z1 Epidemic needs to eat after all!).  In Smedley's opening letter posted to Reddit last night he states that "we want our players to make Woodbury from The Walking Dead if they want to.  Or take over a prison.  Or fix an old car so you and your friends (yeah we have multiplayer vehicles) can run zombies and players over mercilessly".

The game will have a very deep crafting system in place allowing players to make houses, fortresses, weapons (both mobile, ie' machine guns, and stationary ie' a 50 Caliber MG on your tower guarding your fortress for any defender to use), food, etc.

When asked what would differentiate this from the other Survival Horror games on the market (*cough* Day Z *cough*), Smedley said "It's a persistent MMO that can hold thousands of players on servers we host (yes there will be multiple servers with very different rule sets).  Why is that a good thing?  It means a thriving economy (oh yes... there's trading).  It also means you have potential allies in the all-out war on the Infected... and many an enemy as well."

All in all it looks pretty ok from what Smed's has said, and with it being F2P it'll sure get a test drive from many a gamer.  The best part?  We'll be seeing a livestream of the game as SOE hosts a play test, and the game should be available to play testers (though how you become one and who can be one hasn't been discussed) within four to six weeks.

There's a good post over on the new sub Reddit for H1Z1.

I'm going to recreate it here so you can browse it at a glimpse...

Gameplay Details

  • First Person or Third Person shooter.
  • Zombie Survival.
  • Night is dark and full of terrors.
  • Player versus Player at its core.
  • More than just zombies in the world.
  • Base building, town building, fortress creation.
  • Can burn down things others build.
  • Lots of crafting.  Probably the biggest thing about the game.
  • Vehicles are already in.  Possibility of aircraft in the future.
  • Based off the United States.
  • If you die, you lose your gear.  It stays on your corpse.
  • "No skills or levels".
  • "Thousands of players".
  • There will be hunting.

Tech Details

  • PC First, PS4 later.  "Well, we are Sony" when asked about the PS4 version.
    • In terms of cross-platform play, Planetside 2 will not be doing cross platform due to the logistics of updating the game on the PS4 vs the PC.  It is expected that this has not changed, so it is doubful that H1Z1 will be cross platform as well.  However SOE has made no official comment.
  • "If you can run Planetside 2, you can run H1Z1 better".
  • "Orders of magnitude larger than Planetside 2".
  • Based off Planetside 2.  Shares no tech with Everquest Next (so no voxels).
  • Built in voice chat options.

Monetization Details

  • Free to play.
  • Part of the All-Access subscription that SOE is launching towards the end of April.  $14.99 / month for premium subscriptions in all SOE games.
  • "you seriously don't need to spend a time.  We're still figuring out the monetization but we will telegraph our plans early and let people comment and we'll listen if they don't like something and come to a place where people feel good about it." - Smed
  • Early Access ($20ish USD, on steam) in 4 - 6 weeks
